5 simple steps to prepare for the first date
Preparing for a first date is no walk in the park. No matter how many times you have gone on dates or how many relationships you have had, it just isn’t easy to get back into the mindset of meeting a potential long-term partner for the first time. While the process of dating can be nerve-wracking, the key is to make the most of your time so that you can assess whether or not this person is going to be a good partner for you. Want to see if this is going to be a good fit? Plan ahead so you can optimize the time you have.
Does your date have allergies? What kind of food do they hate? Don’t let the location of the first date be a surprise if you aren’t sure what they like or don’t like yet. Give your date options in case there are dietary restrictions to consider, like gluten-free and vegan options if they apply to your date.
Can you remember some of the interests your date listed on his or her profile? Come up with at least three to five questions you can ask based on their interests and if you have mutual friends. Think of a few funny stories that happened in your day that you can share. Come up with a few hot topics in the news that aren’t controversial to discuss. Leave the politics and religion at home, at least on the first date.
Don’t wait for the last minute to start getting ready for your date. Pick out clothes ahead of time, laying them out the day before. This will prevent you from panicking before it is time to go. It’s also a good idea to set up a playlist that will pump you up before the big event.

Active listening is essential on a first date. This means you’re not planning exactly what you’re going to say before you say it. Instead, you are focusing specifically on what the other person is saying, giving them your full and undivided attention. You will feel much more at ease when you are not so inward focused. Plus, you will be able to decide whether this person has real dating potential or not.
Lunch tends to be much better for a first date than a dinner. It is friendlier and feels much less formal. Plus, you have less pressure to keep the date going late into the night if you’re simply not interested.
These tips will prepare you for just a few of the most common grievances that often come up right before going on a first date. While it won’t stop you from having those first date jitters, it is important to remember that those are totally normal for an occasion like this.
