Long distance relationships are nothing new. There are times that having to be apart is a necessary part of life. Even though it can be trying at times, living apart for a short period of time may be beneficial. It proves that your relationship will stand the test of time as well as many of the other trials you may experience along the way. Establishing a foundation based on trust, faith, and commitment will help to solidify your relationship making it strong enough to last until you can be together.
There are several reasons for maintaining a long distance relationship. Military deployment, attending school in a different state, taking a dream job, or having met someone special while traveling abroad are all common reasons for long distance relationships. It doesn’t matter what the reason is for the distance. What does matter is the commitment between you and your partner to make the relationship last. Never take your partner for granted. It takes two to make a relationship work so always do your part.
In the past, lovers who were involved in a long distance relationship had to rely on love letters and phone calls to stay in contact with one another. While those are still commonly used, now you can use email, texts, video, and face-to-face messaging to talk to one another. Advancements in technology allow you to communicate with one another no matter where you are, either across the country or across the globe. Take advantage of the resources you have available to you. Send flowers. Do whatever you have to in order to keep things interesting.
With a long distance relationship, the connection must be maintained based on trust and not physical contact. Intimacy is essential in any relationship but when physical touch is not available, you must be able to compensate with true emotion and feeling based on trust and compassion. Building a relationship on the intangibles helps to create stronger bonds and a more stable foundation. Sometimes, it’s the things that you can’t see that work to create the strongest bonds.
If you are in a long distance relationship, it’s up to you to give your partner the reassurance they need to get them through the periods of loneliness they sometimes feel. Building trust and showing compassion are essential if you want your relationship to remain intact. Talk often. Send messages and photos. Above all never allow them to doubt your sincerity or your commitment.
