Are you tired of swiping your life away when you could be living in bliss with your person? At this point in your life, maybe you’ve made peace with the idea that you might be alone for the rest of your life. But still, there’s a part of you that yearns for love and commitment with the right person you can come home to and share your free time with. You’re realizing that maybe it’s time for a little outside help, but now you’re confused between two options you keep coming across. Should you hire a matchmaker or a dating coach?

One one hand, you like the idea of hiring a matchmaker because they take the work out of dating. But on the other hand, you also like the idea of hiring a dating coach to help you recognize how you might be self-sabotaging your relationship prospects. Whether you hire a matchmaker or a dating coach, the main objective is still the same: to help you find love. So the real question to ask yourself comes down to which option will you personally benefit the most from. To help you explore your options, let’s first get a clear understanding of what each does so that you can make a decision that’s right for you.

What Do Matchmakers Really Do?

Matchmaking is an age-old profession that involves an in-depth in-person interview so the matchmaker can get to know you as well as possible (including preferences and dealbreakers) so they can pair you with potential matches from their personal database of singles, all of which been pre-screened through personal interviews. Sometimes, matchmakers will give you some pre-date coaching, but the real value of matchmaking lies in the post-date feedback. The benefits of working with a matchmaker include personalized attention and it saves you hours of time searching for dates online so you can enjoy the fun parts of dating – like going on actual dates. Some matchmakers will guarantee you a certain number of dates and generally ask for a 6 to 12-month commitment. In a nutshell, matchmakers operate like an introductory service so that all you have to do is show up for the date.

What Do Dating Coaches Really Do?

Dating coaching, on the other hand, involves helping you become your best self so that you can attract the right partner into your life. They work at building your confidence and can also help with the technical aspects of dating like helping you fine-tune your online dating profile, enhancing your communication skills and even helping you make a good first impression on a date. Dating coaches usually work with you on a regular basis to help you overcome the challenges you might encounter in your dating life. Sometimes they might give you assignments or self-assessment to help you develop yourself as a person. Ultimately, a dating coach helps you identify dating behaviors and patterns that no longer serve you and help you adopt new patterns of behavior that will increase your attractiveness in the dating market. Some coaches will work with you for as little as 1 to 3 months or for as long as 6 to 12 months. You’re generally on your own for dates, but at least you’re better equipped for those dates.

Choosing Between a Matchmaker or Dating Coach

In a perfect world, you’d hire a dating coach to help you shift your dating behaviors in your favor while working with a matchmaker to help you find dates. This allows you to focus on you becoming “the one” so that you can attract your “one” person. However, maybe it’s not in your budget to work with both a matchmaker and a dating coach at the same time. If you had to choose between one or the other, here’s what I recommend. If you have the time to invest in yourself and your dating life, consider working with a dating coach. I personally believe that the best favor we can do for the people we love (or want to love!) is to continue developing ourselves so that we can show up in our relationships as our best selves. If, on the other hand, you’re a busy professional who doesn’t have a lot of time to spare, then consider working with a matchmaker so that you can enjoy your personal time doing your own personal development and engaging in activities that make you feel alive so that you show up as your best self everywhere you go, which will naturally increase your attractiveness.
